This is an online portal with information on donations that were announced publicly (or have been shared with permission) that were of interest to Vipul Naik. The git repository with the code for this portal, as well as all the underlying data, is available on GitHub. All payment amounts are in current United States dollars (USD). The repository of donations is being seeded with an initial collation by Issa Rice as well as continued contributions from him (see his commits and the contract work page listing all financially compensated contributions to the site) but all responsibility for errors and inaccuracies belongs to Vipul Naik. Current data is preliminary and has not been completely vetted and normalized; if sharing a link to this site or any page on this site, please include the caveat that the data is preliminary (if you want to share without including caveats, please check with Vipul Naik). We expect to have completed the first round of development by the end of July 2024. See the about page for more details. Also of interest: pageview data on analytics.vipulnaik.com, tutorial in README, request for feedback to EA Forum.

Knight Foundation | 102,000.00 | 3 | -- | Communities | https://knightfoundation.org/grants/5495 | -- | Grant period: 07/01/2012 - 07/31/2014; goal: To increase local environmental coverage, the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo will fund a beat reporter dedicated to environmental issues at a newly launched nonprofit investigative news site. The new reporter will tap into the expertise of local academics and environmental groups, recruiting them for multidisciplinary research teams to produce high-quality investigative journalism. The teams will be built in collaboration with the Western New York Environmental Alliance and many of the region’s 20 universities and colleges, including the State University of New York at Buffalo, St. Bonaventure University, Canisius College and Medaille College. This project deepens the community foundation’s commitment to engaging the public in Western New York’s environmental issues. In previous years, the foundation has received funding from the Knight Community Information Challenge for its efforts to build and expand GrowWNY.org , a communications hub for citizens and environmental groups in Western New York. The foundation is currently working on a Knight-funded project to develop a mobile platform that enables low-income communities and people of color to protect their neighborhoods from environmental hazards. |
Knight Foundation | 132,800.00 | 2 | -- | Technology, Communities, Journalism | https://knightfoundation.org/grants/5231 | -- | Grant period: 07/01/2011 - 07/31/2014; goal: For the Grow Citizen Journalism Project to engage diverse communities in environmental information and action using mobile media tools, targeted messaging, and training in citizen journalism To empower disenfranchised local communities affected by environmental issues, the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo will expand its GrowWNY.org site, a previous challenge winner, to include mobile reporting, mapping and new information applications. These new tools will give a voice to low-income communities and people of color who are disproportionately affected by environmental pollution and have few resources to take action. The Grow Citizen Journalism project will also train citizens in story creation techniques so they can share their first-hand experiences with their toxic surroundings to raise awareness of the issues and encourage action. |
Knight Foundation | 188,000.00 | 1 | -- | Communities | https://knightfoundation.org/grants/4456 | -- | Grant period: 12/08/2008 - 11/30/2011; goal: To create a forum where more than 170 groups concerned with the environment can exchange information and improve citizen engagement growWNY will promote information exchange and community dialogue around reviving post-industrial Buffalo by creating a forum where groups concerned with the environment can exchange information and boost civic engagement. There are more than 170 groups concerned with Western New York’s environment, often working in isolation, with no effective way of knowing what each is doing. In order to improve community dialogue and “ultimately” help revive the region, growWNY will feature discussion groups, resource directories, event calendars, job and volunteer opportunities. In addition, the site will engage the public through tools and incentives to promote environmentally-friendly behavior. With the help of individuals and groups concerned with our regional environment as well as the general public, growWNY will be designed as a convenient and dynamic tool for rapid dissemination of information, active communication, networking and collective problem solving. |
