Cool Earth donations received

This is an online portal with information on donations that were announced publicly (or have been shared with permission) that were of interest to Vipul Naik. The git repository with the code for this portal, as well as all the underlying data, is available on GitHub. All payment amounts are in current United States dollars (USD). The repository of donations is being seeded with an initial collation by Issa Rice as well as continued contributions from him (see his commits and the contract work page listing all financially compensated contributions to the site) but all responsibility for errors and inaccuracies belongs to Vipul Naik. Current data is preliminary and has not been completely vetted and normalized; if sharing a link to this site or any page on this site, please include the caveat that the data is preliminary (if you want to share without including caveats, please check with Vipul Naik). We expect to have completed the first round of development by the end of July 2024. See the about page for more details. Also of interest: pageview data on analytics.vipulnaik.com, tutorial in README, request for feedback to EA Forum.

Some of the main themes: staff members deciding whether to donate directly to specific GiveWell top charities or donate to GiveWell for regranting to top charities. While most people choose the latter, a few choose the former for reasons including tax advantages, opinion of other family members, and slightly different moral weights than those used by GiveWell. Donors also talk about setting aside small portions of their giving for other kinds of causes, including animal welfare, AI safety, climate change, mental health, social justice, and local philanthropy. Amounts donated are not included, per a decision by GiveWell

A few explicitly donate to Malaria Consortium, Against Malaria Foundation, and GiveDirectly. Many staff members announce intent to donate a small fraction of their donation budget for animal welfare charities, but explicit names of animal welfare charities are not included. A number of donors mention donating small amounts to charities focused on justice-related themes and local causes. Not all employees are present in the document (participation is optional). Why we have over-rated Cool Earth (GW, IR)2018-11-26Sanjay Joshi Effective Altruism Forum Cool Earth Evaluator review of doneeClimate changeThe blog post discusses reasons to doubt that Cool Earth is an effective charity in the climate change space. Cool Earth was tentatively recommended by Giving What We Can (GWWC) as a likely good charity to donate to in the climate change space. The blog post suggests that people interested in donating in the climate change space should read Founders Pledge's research and recommendations https://founderspledge.com/research/Cause%20Report%20-%20Climate%20Change.pdf In the comments, John Halstead of Founders Pledge writes "I think this may be a cautionary tale of EA hubris, which we should beware of in the future" which sparks a discussion. Also in the comments, Jamie Harris and Brian Tomasik talk of the downside of increasing rainforest cover through the increased amount of wild animal lives and wild animal suffering it causes; Tomasik links to his past calculations for Cool Earth at https://reducing-suffering.org/climate-change-and-wild-animals/#Dont_buy_biomass-based_carbon_offsets
New research on effective climate charities (GW, IR)2018-07-11John Halstead Effective Altruism ForumFounders Pledge Clean Air Task Force Coalition for Rainforest Nations Cool Earth Review of current state of cause areaClimate changeThe blog post links to a new Founders Pledge report on climate change, published on their research page at https://founderspledge.com/research -- the current version of the report is at https://founderspledge.com/stories/climate-change-executive-summary The two charities identified by the report as good places to donate are the Clean Air Task Force and Coalition for Rainforest Nations. The comments include a lengthy critique by Matthew Dahlhauser along with a reply from Halstead. The report also discusses why Founders Pledge does not recommend Cool Earth (a charity that Giving What We Can had tentatively recommended in the past for climate change, based on its shallow review), and the comments on the post ask more about the reasoning

Jeremy Le Van----2017-12-13Climate change mitigationhttps://staging.founderspledge.com/news/is-silicon-valley-solving-the-problems-that-really-matter-jeremy-le-van-- As the blog post explains, the donor is trying to solve the problem of climate change. He is donating in two ways: first, a systemic approach, and second, a mitigation-focused approach. Cool Earth is the chosen charity for the mitigation-focused approach.
