Protect Our Future donations received

This is an online portal with information on donations that were announced publicly (or have been shared with permission) that were of interest to Vipul Naik. The git repository with the code for this portal, as well as all the underlying data, is available on GitHub. All payment amounts are in current United States dollars (USD). The repository of donations is being seeded with an initial collation by Issa Rice as well as continued contributions from him (see his commits and the contract work page listing all financially compensated contributions to the site) but all responsibility for errors and inaccuracies belongs to Vipul Naik. Current data is preliminary and has not been completely vetted and normalized; if sharing a link to this site or any page on this site, please include the caveat that the data is preliminary (if you want to share without including caveats, please check with Vipul Naik). We expect to have completed the first round of development by the end of July 2024. See the about page for more details. Also of interest: pageview data on analytics.vipulnaik.com, tutorial in README, request for feedback to EA Forum.

Some potential lessons from Carrick’s Congressional bid (GW, IR)2022-05-17Daniel Eth Effective Altruism Forum Carrick Flynn for Congress Protect Our Future Evaluator review of doneeBiosecurity and pandemic preparednessIn this blog post, Daniel Eth discusses learnings from the Carrick Flynn for Congress campaign in Oregon. The campaign failed in the primary despite significant enthusiasm and financial support from effective altruists. The lessons listed are: (1) EAs can seriously compete for open congressional seats, and preparing to run well in advance of a race probably would significantly further improve the odds of winning (2) When running for Congress, having political experience and a good track record is very valuable – including if your campaign is backed up with lots of Super PAC donations (3) In Congressional races, more recent ties to the district/state matter much more than ties from long ago (4) If you think you might run for office in the future, make sure to vote in every election (5) EA candidates themselves may face bad press when running for office, as may the candidates’ large donors, but this doesn’t automatically translate into bad PR for EA as a community (6) As a Democratic candidate, being “the crypto guy” is a political liability; being tied to EA, not as much (7) Even among EAs, politics might somewhat degrade our typical epistemics and rigor – we should guard against this.
The Esoteric Social Movement Behind This Cycle’s Most Expensive House Race. Carrick Flynn follows a niche philosophy known as “effective altruism” that transformed the philanthropy world. Now it's coming for Washington.2022-05-12Ian Ward PoliticoSam Bankman-Fried Carrick Flynn for Congress Protect Our Future Guarding Against Pandemics Miscellaneous commentaryBiosecurity and pandemic preparednessThis fairly lengthy article discusses Carrick Flynn's congressional campaign in Oregon. It goes into Flynn's background in effective altruism and thinking about existential risks (including AI safety and biosecurity and pandemic preparedness) as well as his goal of pushing pandemic preparedness if elected. It also talks of the connection with Sam Bankman-Fried, a crypto billionaire who is also into effective altruism, and discusses claims that Sam Bankman-Fried is funding the Flynn campaign to push a pro-crypto agenda. The article also describes the "secret Congress theory" -- a theory that the best way to pass legislation supporting one's cause is to be really focused on it but not very public about it, and try to push for its inclusion in larger bills.
