Andrew Snyder-Beattie donations made

This is an online portal with information on donations that were announced publicly (or have been shared with permission) that were of interest to Vipul Naik. The git repository with the code for this portal, as well as all the underlying data, is available on GitHub. All payment amounts are in current United States dollars (USD). The repository of donations is being seeded with an initial collation by Issa Rice as well as continued contributions from him (see his commits and the contract work page listing all financially compensated contributions to the site) but all responsibility for errors and inaccuracies belongs to Vipul Naik. Current data is preliminary and has not been completely vetted and normalized; if sharing a link to this site or any page on this site, please include the caveat that the data is preliminary (if you want to share without including caveats, please check with Vipul Naik). We expect to have completed the first round of development by the end of July 2024. See the about page for more details. Also of interest: pageview data on analytics.vipulnaik.com, tutorial in README, request for feedback to EA Forum.

The best $5,800 I’ve ever donated (to pandemic prevention) (GW, IR)2022-02-05Andrew Snyder-Beattie Effective Altruism ForumAndrew Snyder-Beattie Carrick Flynn for Congress Single donation documentationBiosecurity and pandemic preparednessIn this blog post, Andrew Snyder-Beattie, who leads biosecurity and pandemic preparedness grantmaking for Open Philanthropy, documents his personal decision to donate $5,800 (the maximum allowed) to the Congressional campaign of Carrick Flynn in Oregon. The post talks about personal friendship with Carrick Flynn and the latter's great track record and promise, as well as some back-of-the-envelope calculations of how much the donation would help the Flynn campaign. The post would be highly influential, leading several people in the comments to announce having donated to the campaign, with at least some of the commenters explicitly citing the post's influence.

Carrick Flynn for Congress5,800.0012022-02-05Biosecurity and pandemic preparednesshttps://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/Qi9nnrmjwNbBqWbNT/the-best-usd5-800-i-ve-ever-donated-to-pandemic-prevention (GW, IR)-- Donor reason for selecting the donee: The blog post describing the donation gives several reasons: (1) personal friendship with Carrick and high opinion of Carrick's accomplishments, determination, and work ethic, (2) Flynn's focus on pandemic prevention and the importance of having somebody in the United States Congress with a focus on pandemic prevention, and (3) the limit of $2,900 on individual donors to political campaigns (counted separately for the primary and the general election, leading to an effective limit of $5,800 per donor) means that the funding gap for the campaign cannot be filled in by a few wealthy donors, and the value of more people donating is high. The post also includes a crude cost-effectiveness analysis.

Donor reason for donating that amount (rather than a bigger or smaller amount): The blog post says: "This campaign provides a rare opportunity for smaller donors to make a large impact, since political contributions are capped at $5,800 per person ($2,900 for the primary and $2,900 for the general, but you can donate both up front)."

Donor reason for donating at this time (rather than earlier or later): The timing is determined by the timing of https://www.carrickflynnfororegon.com/ (the political campaign).

Other notes: The post has a number of comments, including some voicing concern. Jeff Kaufman and Julia Wise make a donation a few days after the post; see https://www.jefftk.com/donations#footnote2 for details.
