Knight Foundation donations made to Miami Dade College

This is an online portal with information on donations that were announced publicly (or have been shared with permission) that were of interest to Vipul Naik. The git repository with the code for this portal, as well as all the underlying data, is available on GitHub. All payment amounts are in current United States dollars (USD). The repository of donations is being seeded with an initial collation by Issa Rice as well as continued contributions from him (see his commits and the contract work page listing all financially compensated contributions to the site) but all responsibility for errors and inaccuracies belongs to Vipul Naik. Current data is preliminary and has not been completely vetted and normalized; if sharing a link to this site or any page on this site, please include the caveat that the data is preliminary (if you want to share without including caveats, please check with Vipul Naik). We expect to have completed the first round of development by the end of July 2024. See the about page for more details. Also of interest: pageview data on analytics.vipulnaik.com, tutorial in README, request for feedback to EA Forum.

40,000.003--Artshttps://knightfoundation.org/grants/5213-- Grant period: 10/01/2011 - 09/30/2014; part of the challenge: Knight Arts Challenge 2019; goal: To develop local artists by providing intensive creative training and substantive professional development opportunities through the Cultura del Lobo Performance Series Summer Intensives Miami often lacks professional development programs for active performing artists who want continuing educational opportunities without having to enroll in a degree program. Popular in many universities worldwide, summer intensives that feature master artists address a need for professionals seeking advanced-level, world-class training at home. Miami Dade College’s MDC Live! series proposes to expand its educational component to create more in-depth intensives and long-term learning opportunities for performing artists.
150,000.001--Technology, Journalismhttps://knightfoundation.org/grants/4575-- Grant period: 08/01/2009 - 11/30/2011; goal: To establish Miami as a City of Refuge for persecuted writers Free speech writing can still be a perilous act in many places throughout the world. Between January and June 2006, 19 writers were murdered, 33 had received death threats and 142 were imprisoned, according to International PEN's Writers in Prison Committee. Cities of Refuge North America aids persecuted writers around the globe by creating safe havens for them in North America, spaces where they may practice their craft freely, unfettered by censorship and political repression. They assist writers worldwide while enriching both communities and the literary landscape in North America. This grant gives Knight the opportunity to set a Knight community as a City of Refuge for persecuted writers. Grant funds will support the costs of hosting a persecuted writer in residence for two years. During that time, the writer will teach a course at MDC and participate in public readings and discussions.
75,000.002--Communitieshttps://knightfoundation.org/grants/4225-- Grant period: 12/01/2007 - 01/31/2011; goal: To broaden development of Miami's civic leaders by supporting the Miami Leadership Roundtable Speaker Series to include a track for lectures by women in government, business, and the media.
